MDC Lady Sharks win national softball championship
This past weekend marked a historic occasion in Miami Dade College softball as the Lady Sharks won their first National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship. The team clinched the title in St. George, Utah, with a 7-0 victory over Alabama-based Wallace State, finishing the season with a record 51 wins against just 6 losses, and marking the 203rd win for Head Coach Carlos Caro in his five-season career with the Sharks.
MDC's softball team was the No. 3 seed and finished the tournament undefeated, beating No. 2 Chipola College (Fla.), No. 4 Wallace State, No. 5 Yavapai (Ariz.) and No. 6 Blinn College (Texas) en route to the title. MDC outscored their five tournament opponents by a combined 46 to 11. MDC Pitcher Erika Bennett was named the tournament's most outstanding player, leading four of the Sharks' five tournament wins, and striking out 32 in 26 innings.
While the 2010 national title represents the College's first in fast-pitch softball, our athletic teams have earned 33 total NJCAA titles, including 13 in women's sports.
Please join me in congratulating all of the Sharks players and Coach Caro. This victory solidifies the power of hard work and determination, and shows what we can accomplish when we dare to dream big.
Thank you.
