Miami, September 1, 2010 - Recently, the Merage Foundation for the American Dream honored singer, composer, author and humanitarian Gloria Estefan with its 2010 National Leadership Award. Honorees receiving this distinction were then asked to select a college where an immigrant student will receive a special plaque and a $5,000 scholarship. Estefan chose Miami Dade College (MDC) where her husband, music mogul Emilio Estefan, attended. Other honorees receiving this special recognition included California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former NBA standout Dikembe Mutombo, and New York Times columnist Roger Cohen, among other immigrants who’ve enjoyed great success in America.   The Merage Foundation honors nationally and internationally respected American leaders who came to the U.S. as immigrants and who have made significant contributions to America.

The application process is now open for MDC students interested in receiving the Merage Foundation for the American Dream Scholarship. All applicants must submit a completed MDC scholarship application form, along with a 500-word essay expressing their perspectives on the ideals of democracy, freedom and patriotism. They must be an immigrant student and with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. The application process will close on October 1, 2010. Later in the fall, the winner will be announced and recognized at an event. The scholarships will be awarded to coincide with the MDC Spring 2011 Term. First-year students are welcome to apply. Visit http://www.mdc.edu/scholarships/ for more information.
