MDC and ConnectFamilias Partner to Host 4th Annual Child Safety Fair Sept. 18

Miami, August 25, 2010 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) InterAmerican Campus (IAC) and ConnectFamilias will host the Fourth Annual Caring for Kids Child Safety Fair at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010. The Fair is a free event aimed at making homes and communities safer for kids.
“The purpose of this event is to connect the community with the resources available to them relating to child safety, health, and education,” said Antonio Delgado, student life director at MDC’s InterAmerican Campus.
“Most people don’t know what is available to them and this is a way to link residents with the service providers of the ConnectFamilias network and other community agencies.”
Fair organizers hope the event will help parents as well as children learn how to keep safe from situations such as what to do in the event of a fire, dealing with strangers, and how to properly wear bike helmets. Specialists will be conducting preliminary developmental screenings for children ages 0-5.
There will also be workshops for high-school students on SAT preparation and how to get ready for the transition from high school to college.
Parents will also have the opportunity to attend a workshop about college education in the U.S. that will include tips on supporting children during the application process and once they’ve enrolled.
“We’re teaming up with community partners. There will be entertainment, giveaways, and a lot of different things going on,” said Lourdes Perez, dean of student services at MDC’s InterAmerican Campus. “There will be fire fighters explaining how to stop, drop and roll in a fire emergency, and tips on health and wellness. It will be a fun and informative event.”
The Caring for Kids Child Safety Fair is a program of ConnectFamilias, which is funded by The Children’s Trust and the State Attorney’s Office Denise Moon Memorial Fund at the Dade Community Foundation.
ConnectFamilias’ mission is to establish an efficient, consistent and holistic network of coordinated services that increase the safety and well-being of children and families.
