MDC Cultura Del Lobo Presents Chinese Choreographer Yin Mei’s City of Paper March 19-20

Miami, March 5, 2010 - Known for her visually stimulating choreography in dance theater, Chinese artist Yin Mei will present her latest production, City of Paper, during Miami Dade College’s (MDC) popular Cultura Del Lobo performance series on Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Byron Carlyle Theater in Miami Beach.
City of Paper is a multimedia dance theater work interweaving personal history, contemporary and traditional dance, music, interactive sound and visuals to explore the practical, sensual and transformative qualities of paper.
It is a collaborative production, with contributions from dancer Sang Jijia, composer Richard Marriott and scenographic designer Christopher Slater. The choreography and text will be performed by U.S. and Chinese dancers on stage, where paper plays an active, even magical, role.
The production is based on the history of Luoyang, Yin Mei's hometown, where paper was invented. An ancient literary and artistic center, Luoyang became another world during her childhood, when the Cultural Revolution made paper political, and the city was plastered with slogans and critiques.
A native of China, Yin Mei has been choreographing and performing contemporary works worldwide since coming to the United States in 1985.
She formed Yin Mei Dance in 1995, which was established to touch people through performance and go beyond that to evoke a personal, even spiritual connection between the performers and the audience.
In its 20th season, MDC’s Cultura del Lobo showcases work from all disciplines to profile the most relevant performances being produced nationally and internationally today.
In a time of natural disasters, economic challenges and deep moral searching across the globe, the Series continues to seek out top performance works that communicate the highest order of human expression and that remind us that art, in its complex and visceral presence, is humanity at its best.
In fact, MDC is renowned for all its cultural programming and considered by many as the region’s cultural anchor with its Miami Book Fair International, Miami International Film Festival, National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, and acclaimed art gallery and theater systems.
